  • Tip 1: Take out the screws from the bottom hinge before the top hinge when unscrewing the original door, whilst making sure the door is well supported when you take out the last screw.
  • Tip 2: When cutting the new door to size use the old door as a template by simply laying it on top and marking where to plane or cut. For balancing make sure to take an equal amount of wood from both the top and the bottom.
  • Tip 3: Before you hang the door make sure that the new hinges fit the old ones on the frame… if they don’t use a chisel and mallet to cut away excess wood on the frame.

  • Tip 4: When hanging the door, screw each hinge to the door frame with a single screw, use wedges to prop the door and mark out the top and bottom of the hinge on the door.
  • Tip 5: Lay the hinges on the edge of the door in line with your markings and draw around the hinge.
  • Tip 6: Firstly make sure the sloped edge ‘bevel’ is facing towards the waste wood and at 5mm intervals use the chisel and mallet to the same depth as the flap. Make sure there flush and screw to make a starter hole.
  • Tip 7: Support the door on wedges and at right angles to the frame and fix the hinge flaps to the door frame using just one screw.
  • Tip 8: Before fixing all the screws check that the door opens and closes correctly.
  • Tip 9: If painting the door be sure to apply knotting solution on any knots to prevent resin in the paint.
  • Tip 10: When you drill the hole mark the latch plate on the door, the latch it is usually set into the middle of the side of the door about 1m from the bottom of the door.

  • Tip 11: Use a flat wood cutting drill bit that’s slightly bigger than your latch when drilling it this is to ensure that there’s enough room to fit the latch in the hole. Use masking tape to mark the depth of the latch on the bit.
  • Tip 12: When fixing the latch don’t forget to check to see if the latch plate lies flush with the door.
  • Tip 13: When making the spindle hole choose a drill bit 2mm wider than the spindle. When the drill bit begins to emerge through the other side of the door, start drilling from that side to stop the wood splitting.
  • Tip 14: Measure the distance between the edge of the latch and the edge of the door to find the horizontal position of the latch plate. Mark this on the door frame drawing in and around the latch plate.
